Herschel (Sterkspruit)

Herschel Advice office was established in 1991 and registered in 1999 as NPO. The organization is based in Herschel a small rural town located 190km from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. The main objective of the organization is to reduce the impact of poverty and violation of human rights through information awareness programs, community education programs and providing paralegal services to members of their community. The advice office also plays a key role of facilitating socio – economic development in the Senqu Municipality. Herschell is one of the SCAT longest funded organization. They are currently receiving funding from SCAT with past funders Rhodes University Legal Aid Clinic (RULAC) and the National Lotteries Board. 

Governance and management

Herschel is governed by a management committee of 5 members made up a Chairperson, Treasurer, Vice Treasurer, Secretary, Vice secretary and an additional member. The staff complement is made up of 2 staff members, a Project manager, Ms Mpopie Mthiya and a Paralegal officer.

  • LED projects aimed  at the reduction of poverty and income generation

 

Highlights, achievements, innovative projects

Below are some of the achievements of the advice office

  • Formed strategic partnerships with the office of the Public protector office as a result the Public protector has visited villages in the Senqu municipality to hear firsthand what their issues were. 
  •  Resolved paralegals 200 cases brought to the office by community members.
  • Using their building to generate income for the office by renting out some of the offices.  This is generating on average R14 000 per annum.
