Tyinira Rural Development Centre

Tyinira Rural Development Agency is a registered NPO director based in Ngqamakhwe a rural village between Butterworth and King Williamstown. The organization was initiated by a retired teacher with the assistance of another teacher in the community.  They both had a vision of “ Vukuzenzela” ( wake up and do something for yourself and therefore established Tyinira with the sole purpose of addressing the socio – economic plight of the residents of their village.   The organization is comprised of young and old people sharing knowledge, skills and experience in order to address the challenges that they face on daily basis. Their flagship project is their Piggery project which has created employment opportunities for members of the community and an income generation project for the organization. The organization was first funded by SCAT in 2014 but prior to this they were not receiving any funding for their organization.

Tyinira is governed by a committee of 7 members made up of a Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer and 2 additional members. The staff compliment is 5 people with Ms Nongazi Sofute as Project Coordinator.

Main activities of the LDA

The main activities of the organization are:

  • To assist and advise people on human rights issues
  • To disseminate information on agricultural farming and empower community members to provide own food
  • To improve the standard of living in the community through their income generating projects

 

Highlights, achievements, innovative projects

The main highlight of the organisation in their Piggery project which has created jobs for community members and has become a source income stream for the organisation.
