MAIN CHALLENGES FACED BY THE COMMUNITY: unemployment, HIV/AIDS, drugs and substance abuse, poor service delivery and lack of support for those living with disabilities.
MAIN ACTIVITIES: Operating a safe house and related programming to residents of the safe house.
Reya Phela Safe House is an established registered NPO and NPC with a PBO status, situated in Bloemspruit, Mangaung. The organisation is led by a governance team of 8 members from the community. The CBO is in what is regarded as the epicentre of the GBV pandemic in the Free State with a high rate of GBVF (Gender-based violence and Femicide) cases.
The organisation is part of the structure set up by the provincial government to address GBVF and a focus on the status of women in the province. This structure is made up of representatives from civil society, government and chapter 9 institutions such as the Human Rights Council. The project manager is representing her organisation in the GBVF part of this structure. The majority of the clients served by the organisation are women, children, and LGBTIQ. They work in partnership with the local SA Police services staff, social workers and leaders in the community.
