MAIN CHALLENGES FACED BY THE COMMUNITY: Worker exploitation and abuse, farmworkers’ rights, poverty, substance abuse and gender-based violence.
MAIN ACTIVITIES: Access to Justice, Gender, Child Rights and Youth Empowerment
The Witzenberg Rural Development Centre has a strong focus on access to justice. They are working e.g. on a case dating back to 2016 involving an employer who deducted provident fund but never paid these funds over to the fund. The unfair treatment of workers in the Witzenberg area remains a concern.
The lack of housing, basic services and living conditions of farmworkers in particular is another area of advocacy and support.
The Centre collaborates with other stakeholders such as the Community Safety Forum and government departments around the serious child substance abuse that are being observed. They are exploring joint proposals to address this issue.
