MAIN CHALLENGES FACED BY THE COMMUNITY: poverty, crime, unemployment, gender based violence.
MAIN ACTIVITIES: Access to justice, addressing service delivery failures, GBV, youth empowerment and climate change.
The Inter-Church Local Development Agency (ILDA) was founded in the 1980s by Molly Blackburn, Bishop Michael Coleman, Judy Chalmers and other community leaders as a direct response to the Langa massacre. Initially its main objective was obtaining legal assistance for those affected along with offering support to families looking for missing relatives.
The organization has a long-standing commitment to offering access to justice services in Uitenhage, particularly in cases of unfair labor practices and dismissals. They also address service delivery failures at the local government level, employing non-violent methods like petitions to advance human rights and civil liberties.
Their gender-based violence program provides monitoring, awareness, and support, utilising local radio to reach women, girls, and the broader community. Additionally, their climate change initiative focuses on building awareness and supporting household food gardens, thereby tackling food insecurity.
