The Masiphakameni Local Development Agency (LDA) is based in the Kouga Municipality, within the Sarah Baartman District of the Eastern Cape. It was established in 1982 in response to apartheid-era laws and the urgent need for accessible paralegal assistance.
The organisation focuses on human rights and labour-related issues in a region where agriculture and fishing dominate the local economy. Masiphakameni also works on addressing gender-based violence, improving service delivery, enhancing access to social grants, and promoting food security. Each year, the LDA assists approximately 1,500 clients.
The LDA collaborates with various organisations to better serve their community. These partnerships include the Rhodes Law Clinic and Lawyers for Human Rights, who offer support with complex legal cases. For GBV awareness and assistance with protection orders, they work with SAPS and the Humansdorp Victim Support and Community Policing Forum. Additionally, the LDA actively participates in public engagement programs like Hydrogen Watch.
