The Sandveld Local Development Agency (SALDA) was established in Graafwater in 2013 and led by Jonathan van der Westhuizen through it’s formative years. Wasiela Douries was appointed Coordinator when Jonathan (who has since passed away) stepped down to pursue other opportunities. SALDA’s mission is to provide services to the poor and vulnerable, to advocate for their community and to build the capacity of their community.
They have made strides in labor related cases, particularly in supporting workers to claim Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) benefits. By facilitating access to justice, they have successfully encouraged government departments and key stakeholders to provide localised services, ensuring that communities receive essential labor protections. Their expertise extends to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) through public education initiatives and direct support for GBV cases, reinforcing a commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals. Through their advocacy and intervention, the agency has empowered workers, streamlined UIF claim processes, and fostered systemic equity within labor rights frameworks.
